Turkey - Freedom of the Press - Turkey detains journalists who allege army lorries carried weapons for ISIS
Recep Tayip Erdogan dragging Turkey into the abyss |
The paper has seen its Editor-in-chief and Ankara correspondent arrested and charged with espionage and treason on Thursday for daring to accuse Turkey of doing business with ISIL.
Both men say they have only done their jobs and deny their reporting is helping enemies of Turkey.
“As you know, an investigation has been launched into our reports on intelligence agency MIT trucks carrying weapons. The plaintiff is President Tayyip Erdogan himself.
We came here to defend journalism. We came here to defend people’s right to be informed, their right to learn the truth if the government is lying,” said Can Dündar, the senior of the two men.
“If the country is under a certain threat or in danger, a journalist has to report it,” said Erdem Gül.
Both men were placed in custody after their declarations. Turkey is currently rated near the bottom of global tables for press freedom and President Recep Tayyip Erdogan says the author of the lorry story “will pay a heavy price”.

Turkish Elections: Turkish police storm opposition Bugun TV during live broadcast
Is Erdogan holding on to power with brute force? |
The raid is part of a crackdown on companies linked to a preacher who is an arch enemy of President Recep Tayyip Erdogan.
Footage showed police spraying water cannnon at people in front of Koza Ipek outlet Bugun TV, which is owned by cleric Fethullah Gulen who is accused of plotting to overthrow the president.
Authorities on Tuesday took over 22 companies owned by Koza Ipek in an investigation of alleged financial irregularities, including whether it funded Gulen. The company denies wrongdoing.
Erdogan has clamped down on commercial interests belonging to once-influential followers of Gulen, his former ally, after police and prosecutors considered sympathetic to the cleric opened a corruption investigation of Erdogan’s inner circle in 2013.

Turkey media arrests: Erdogan rejects EU criticism of Turkey curbing Press Freedom
Turkish President Recep
Tayyip Erdogan has lashed out at the European Union after it criticised
the mass arrest of opposition journalists at the weekend.
EU leaders have said the arrests were incompatible with "European values".
At least 24 journalists said to have close links with a US-based cleric are being held for plotting to seize power.
Sunday's raids targeted the Zaman newspaper and Samanyolu TV channel, which are described as close to Islamic cleric Fethullah Gulen, the spiritual leader of the Hizmet movement.
A former ally of Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan, Mr Gulen - who lives in self-imposed exile - is accused of running a "parallel state" within Turkey.
