The Netherlands -Soccwe EURO 2020Bounced out of Euro 2020, the Netherlands looks to future

After a seven-year wait for a spot in a major tournament, the Netherlands got three workmanlike wins against outmatched opponents and a humbling loss to the Czech Republic.

What looked like a Super Sunday for Dutch sports fans following Max Verstappen’s win at the Styrian Grand Prix and Mathieu van der Poel’s Tour de France stage win, turned sour when the Netherlands lost 2-0 in Budapest and tumbled out of the European Championship.

Soccer Euro 2020: The Netherlands beat Austria to book ticket to last 16

How often is a match decided by a single miscue? Too often, if you are Germany or Austria at Euro 2020. Two days after an own goal by national team returnee Mats Hummels saw Germany fall 1-0 to reigning World Cup champions France, Austrian captain David Alaba committed the foul that resulted in a Dutch penalty – that Memphis Depay confidently put away.

Soccer: Italy 1-1 Netherlands: Improved Oranje earn point in Bergamo - Italy

The Netherlands kept their chances of progressing in the Nations League alive with a well-earned point against Italy in Bergamo.

Frank de Boer is still searching for his first win after four games as manager, but his team looked far more assured and incisive than they did in the goalless draw against Bosnia-Herzegovina on Saturday.

Soccer Powerhouse Italy Copes With The 'Indelible Stain' Of Missing The World Cup - by Colin Dwyer

This is the way World Cup hopes end — not with a bang, but with a whimper.

With their tournament dreams on the line against Sweden on Monday night, the Italian men's national team — the four-time World Cup champion Italian men's national team — simply could not get the win they needed. They didn't even demonstrate the knack for tragedy that might have made for a dramatic defeat, à la the U.S. men.

Instead, Italians watched their opportunity to play in the 2018 World Cup wither slowly as the scoreboard stayed empty, drifting to a scoreless tie with the Swedes in Milan. With the 0-0 draw, Sweden booked their own ticket to Russia to play in one of the world's most watched events.

Not since 1958 has the World Cup lacked an Italian team.

Luckily, though, it appears Italians are taking it in stride: "Italy, this is the apocalypse," declared the Italian sports publication La Gazzetta dello Sport.

Soccer: Poland suffer rare home defeat at hands of Netherlands

A young Netherlands side gave Poland much food for thought on the eve of Euro 2016 by condemning them to a 2-1 defeat.

The Poles came into the fixture having lost only once in their last 18 internationals, but goals from Vincent Janssen and Giorginio

Wijnaldum in each half extended Poland's run without a victory over the Netherlands - one that stretche back to May 1979.

The Netherlands: football: Blind calls Depay into Dutch squad, retains Robben |

Netherlands coach Danny Blind has called Manchester United forward Memphis Depay into his squad for the friendly matches against Wales and Germany, while retaining Bayern Munich's Arjen Robben.

Depay was a surprise omission from the provisional squad on Monday and Blind questioned the former PSV star's ability to work as a team player as his country seeks to rebuild from their failure to reach Euro 2016.

Blind also suggested fitness problems were a factor in Depay's absence, but he went on to feature as a substitute in United's 1-0 Champions League win over CSKA Moscow on Tuesday.

Robben was also in midweek Champions League action, making an instant impact from the bench to score in Bayern's dominant 5-1 victory against Arsenal.

The former Chelsea and Real Madrid attacker recently returned to fitness due to a thigh problem and suggested on Thursday that he would require a green light from his club to turn out on international duty.

"We will have to wait and see whether I will play against Wales and Germany. I will discuss my situation with the club to see what is a sensible decision here," Robben told SBS6.

Like Depay, Ajax midfielder Riechedly Bazoer is named in the 24-man squad despite not being present on the provisional list, although Fenerbahce striker Robin van Persie remains a high-profile absentee.

Vurnon Anita, Karim Rekik, Jeroen Zoet and Anwar El Ghazi failed to make the final cut, although Ajax forward El Ghazi suffered an ankle injury during his club's 0-0 Europa League draw against Fenebahce on Thursday and is set to spend two weeks on the sidelines.

Feyenoord midfielder Marko Vejinovic has had his maiden call-up confirmed for the trip to Cardiff on November 13 and Hannover's HDI-Arena four days later.

The Netherlands - Soccer: Nazi chants at Dutch soccer game expose an ugly blot on ‘the beautiful game’ and on the Netherlands - by Michael E. Miller

It was a beautiful day for soccer in the Dutch town of Utrecht. Spring sunshine filled the stadium as the local team, FC Utrecht, kicked off against perennial powerhouse Ajax Amsterdam.

As the beautiful game slowly played out on the field, however, things in the stands quickly got ugly.

“Hamas, Hamas, Jews to the gas,” sang a section of the home supporters towards the fans visiting from Amsterdam, a city historic in part for its Jewish community. “My father was in the commandos, my mother was in the SS, together they burned Jews, because Jews burn the best!”

The anti-Semitism was caught on video and quickly circulated among Dutch media. FC Utrecht issued an apology as Jewish organizations demanded action by soccer authorities.

The shocking chants weren’t an isolated incident, however. Instead, they were the latest in a string of anti-Semitic episodes that threaten to mar European soccer.

Discrimination isn’t new to European football, or soccer. The sport has long struggled with racism, a problem which resurfaced recently when Chelsea fans pushed a black man off the Paris metro, chanting: “We’re racist, we’re racist, and that’s the way we like it.”

Note EU-Digest  This incident is not only an ugly blot on Dutch soccer fans, but also on Holland as a nation, and the rest of the world in general. Maybe, "We the People" should be reminded from time to time, that no one is better than another in this world of ours - we are also all equal when it comes to the bad things we do in life - it is only a question of our own perception, as to how we divine what is good, bad or worse. If you have the time, or want to take the time, please listen to the Easter Sermon of Tullian Tchividjian - http://www.crpc.org/mediaPlayer/#sermonvideo/688 - a Pastor in Fort Lauderdale, Florida, which reminds us, pretty clearly, of this human flaw, know to some of us as hypocrisy.

Soccer: Key Battles That Will Shape Netherlands' Clash with Czech Republic

It won't be the first time the two countries face off: The Netherlands and the Czech Republic have played against each other a total of nine times.

Three games were won by the Dutch, three by the Czechs. The remaining three matches ended in a draw. In other words: From both perspectives, the two nations seem like worthy opponents.

Soccer: Ajax beat Celtic 1-0 to keep the Dutch team's Champions League campaign alive

Lasse Schoene scored the only goal on Wednesday as Ajax beat Celtic 1-0 to keep the Dutch team's Champions League campaign alive.

Schoene, promoted from midfield to the forward line for the match, rounded off a slick passing move in the 51st minute to secure three points for Frank de Boer's team and end a run of six Champions League matches without a win.

Celtic beat Ajax 2-1 in Glasgow two weeks ago to leave the four-time European champion bottom of Group H with only a single point from three matches and facing elimination from a group that also includes Barcelona and AC Milan.

Barcelona remained top of the group by beating second-placed AC Milan 3-1 on Wednesday. Ajax went third, one point behind Milan.

Ajax dominated possession at the Amsterdam Areana but, as has been the team's problem in recent weeks, it struggled to convert domination into clear-cut chances.

Turkey v Netherlands - 2-0 Turkey crushed by clinical Holland

Holland celebrated their qualification for the World Cup finals with a 2-0 win to finally end Turkey's tame challenge for a play-off place.

Fatih Terim's men needed to beat the Group D winners, who sealed their place in Brazil last week, while hoping rivals Romania dropped points.

But an early free-kick from Arjen Robben beat Volkan Demirel to put Turkey firmly on the back foot and Wesley Sneijder's goal shortly after the break confirmed a fateful 2-0 win.

It was a ninth win in 10 qualifying games for Holland but Turkey finished a poor fourth behind Romania and Hungary after both nations won their respective games against Estonia and Andorra.

In a game which featured a Holland side fresh from hammering Hungary 8-1 and a Turkey team desperate to secure second place, it was remarkable that the first 20 minutes produced only one shot on goal.

Soccer : Netherlands thrashes Hungary 8-1 in qualifier

Dutch Soccer Team celebrates 8-1 win over Hungary
Robin van Persie scored a hat trick Friday to become the all-time Dutch top scorer as the Netherlands thrashed Hungary 8-1 in a World Cup qualifier.

The Netherlands had already qualified for next year's finals, and Hungary's hopes of consolidating second place in Group D were erased by a vintage Dutch performance.

With Romania beating Andorra 4-0 and Turkey downing Estonia 2-0, second place in the group is still up for grabs with one round to go.

Umut Bulut opened the scoring in the 22nd minute for Turkey in Estonia and Burak Yilmaz made it 2-0 in the 47th to Take Turkey into second in the group, ahead of Romania on goal difference.

Andorra managed to restrict visiting Romania to a Claudiu Keseru goal in the first half, but Bogdan Stancu, Gabriel Torje and Costin Lazar all scored as Romania stamped its class on the Group D minnow after the break.

Turkey and Romania's wins took them ahead of Hungary, level on 16 points.

In next week's final matches, Turkey faces a tough match against the Netherlands in Istanbul, Romania hosts Estonia and Hungary has a home game against Andorra.
