Many children in the Netherlands have grown up with the image of Black Pete, a helper for St Nicholas, an equivalent of Santa Claus.
The character is highly controversial, as the figure is usually portrayed by a white person wearing blackface makeup with exaggerated lips and an afro wig
Note Almere Digest: Indeed quite controversial. This has been a centuries old tradional Childrens celebration, before it became a racial issue. Amazing that the people promoting this as a racial issue have no qualms with the flagrant human rights violations of Saudi Arabia and many other countries around the world?

EU-Saudi Relations: European Parliament urges EU to snub Saudi G20 Summit
The European Parliament on Thursday voted to downgrade its attendance
at the November G20 summit in Saudi Arabia over human rights concerns,
and to urge for sanctions.
The bill is one of the strongest political messages the institution has ever issued on Saudi Arabia and comes on the two-year anniversary of the killing of journalist Jamal Khashoggi.
MEPs approved a wide-ranging resolution that condemns Saudi human rights abuses and urges the European Union to downgrade its representation at the upcoming G20 Leaders' Summit to avoid legitimizing human rights violations.
Belgian MEP and vice chair of the delegation for the relations with Arab Peninsula Marc Tarabella said: "We are all aware of the importance of Saudi Arabia as a partner of the European Union and for the stability of the Middle East. However, this must not be an alibi for violating human rights."

Iran-US Relations: Is the US On the Verge of a War with Iran?
Trump: we will help Saudi Arabia in their struggle against Iran |
The answers are as obvious as the day is long. The strike on Soleimani is a gigantic leap forward on the escalation ladder, a move so dramatic that Iran will be forced to respond. And it will do so at a time and place of its choosing. The 60,000-70,000 U.S. military forces in the Middle East are now all potential targets of Iranian retaliation, the extent to which Washington can’t fully estimate. The State Department’s travel advisory urging all U.S. citizens to leave Iraq immediately is an indication that the Trump administration recognizes that Americans on Iraqi soil could very well be sitting ducks for some kind of violent response.
Note EU-Digest: The Washington Post reported that several European diplomats said Friday that they were not aware of any warning from Washington ahead of the strike on Soleimani in Baghdad, though the mission was almost certain to increase the security risk for hundreds of European troops and for other European citizens in the region. The Netherlands government advised all its citizens in Iraq to leave the country. Once again as he did with pulling troops out of Syria it shows he does not have any respect for his Allies and the lives of their troops, who have always supported the US, and put their lives at risk. it is high time the EU tells the US Trump Administration that " the party is over", and that they should start fighting their own ridiculous wars around the world.

EU pays tribute to Saudi journalist Khashoggi on anniversary of killing - by Toga Bozoglu
The European Union paid tribute on 2 October to the memory of Jamal Khashoggi,
a Saudi journalist who was murdered last year in the premises of the
Consulate General of the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia in Istanbul.
The EU reiterated in a statement the need to ensure full accountability for those responsible and insisted on an investigation of the circumstances of the killing.
“Jamal Khashoggi continues to be an inspiration to journalists and associates with whom he was in contact for his work, including colleagues in the EU institutions.”
“As Jamal Khashoggi, journalists are too often the target of attacks in many countries.
On this occasion, the European Union reaffirms its unequivocal commitment to the freedom of the press and the protection of journalists across the world.”, the statement reads.
Note-EU-Digest: Kudos to the Government of Turkey, for renaming a street near the former Saudi Consulate General offices in Istanbul, "the Khashoggi street", and allowing Jeff Bezos, Founder of Amazon, and owner of the Washington Post, where Khashoggi worked, to unveil a memorial to the murdered journalist today, the first anniversary of the journalist's death.
The US remains the number one exporter of arms to Saudi Arabia and the world. Earlier in the year, Trump rebuffed bi-partisan US congressional efforts to punish Saudi Arabia for the killing of columnist Jamal Khashoggi , and turned back criticism over the kingdom’s prosecution of its war against Houthi rebels in Yemen.

Middle East - Iran: President Trump Tweets About Possible Iran Strike After Saudi Arabia Oil Bombing
In this edition of America First, the President
of the United States tweeted that we're "locked and loaded" to go to war
with Iran and we're just waiting for Saudi Arabia to tell us what to
do. This really is not an exaggeration. "Saudi Arabia oil supply was
attacked," Donald Trump said on the Tweet Machine.
"There is reason to believe that we know the culprit, are locked and
loaded depending on verification, but are waiting to hear from the
Kingdom as to who they believe was the cause of this attack, and under
what terms we would proceed!"

Yes, we are waiting for word from Crown Prince Mohammad bin Salman—the guy who allegedly orders journalists critical of him chopped up and thrown in an oven in the backyard of one of his ambassadors, who leads the regime that is helping to perpetuate a human-rights catastrophe in Yemen using American-made weapons, the same regime that just happens to be spending a fortune at Trump's hotels. If the crown prince gives us the go-ahead, we're bombing Iran! America First.
You would think that, having just marked the 18th anniversary of
September 11—a reminder we're now poised to send kids to Afghanistan who
were not born when the attacks happened—we'd be a little more worried
about getting pulled into another quagmire of death and suffering. You
would think that, at this point, we would be re-evaluating our strategy
in the region, including our unbreakable bond with Saudi Arabia. And yet
you could flip on Fox News this morning and find a Democratic senator
from a solid-blue state mongering the war.
How many times are we going to do this? What is the best-case scenario if we enter armed conflict with Iran, which has missiles that can reach deep into Europe and a standing army of well over half a million people?
Will we just bomb them and run? Will we try to topple the regime? Who
will rise to power in the vaccuum? What would victory even look like? Can anyone tell us what it will look like
in the multiple armed conflicts we're already engaged in nearby?
Have we learned fucking anything? How many American kids have to die in the sand and rock before we learn the United States cannot win when it starts blowing things up in the Middle East?

Vietnam have received this year's press freedom prizes awarded by the
NGO Reporters Without Borders. Two were not allowed to travel to collect
their award.
Only Caroline Muscat was able to appear in person to collect her "Prize for
Independence." Vietnamese blogger Pham Doan Trang, who won the "Prize

winner of the "Prize for Courage," both remain barred from leaving
their countries, their websites blocked, and under constant threat of
detention and harassment.

Middle East Crises - Consequences of the Trump Administration dysfunctional Middle East policy: U.S. military has begun reoccupying Prince Sultan air base in Saudi Arabia - by Courtney Kube
"In June the U.S. military began moving equipment and hundreds of troops back to a military base in Saudi Arabia that the U.S. deserted more than 15 years ago, according to two U.S. officials familiar with the deployment.
Over the coming weeks the deployment to Prince Sultan Air Base,
intended to counter the threat from Iran, will grow to include fighter
jets and Patriot long-range missile defense systems, the officials said.
The Patriots have already arrived at the base and should be operational
in mid-July, while the aircraft are expected to arrive in August.
Several hundred U.S. service members are already on site preparing the facility south of Riyadh, which is controlled by the Royal Saudi Air Force, a number that will grown to more than 500 after the arrival of an air squadron.
The US officials said the deployment focuses on defensive capabilities, with Patriot batteries for missile defense and the fighter jets intended to defend U.S. forces on the ground. But they acknowledged the aircraft could be used offensively as well."
Note EU-Digest: It seems that the wheels are coming off the Trump's Administration dysfunctional Middle East foreign policy, which, unfortunately, is getting very little in-depth scrutiny, by either the Press, or government sources, specially those in Europe.
The fact is that the US, by unilaterally getting out of the Iran Nuclear Agreement, signed by the United States, the United Kingdom, Russia, France, Germany, and the EU, back in 2015, is the direct cause of the present crisis in the Middle East.

USA -Trump's Foreign Policy: It is all about RealPolitiek and the EU better get their act togetherUSA -Trump's Foreign Policy: It is all about RealPolitiek and the EU better get their act together
Otto Eduard Leopold von Bismarck |
Trump has embraced the law of the jungle, which political scientists and historians define as RealPolitik.
The term “RealPolitik” is widely used today as a synonym for “power politics” and understood as the realist approach to foreign policy, a venerable tradition that stretches from Machiavelli and Bismarck to scholar-diplomats of the postwar era such as George Kennan and Henry Kissinger.
RealPolitik
can also be seen as the political approach of self-sufficiency.
Decisions on public policy, when approached from a position of
RealPolitik, are not afforded time for sympathy or compassion. Rather,
RealPolitik is an approach of shrewd pragmatism solely on the basis of
political expedience.
Case
in Point: In the Middle East the US Trump Administration has chosen
three principal partners: Israel - the only nation in the Middle East
with a nuclear arsenal - Saudi-Arabia, the number one oil producer in
the world and Egypt , the country with the largest army in the Middle
East. These countries have developed a very close relation with the US
over the years and importantly to the US, do what they are told to do by
the US.
Realpolitik
has played a huge role in this case, as it allowed Israel’s Prime
Minister, Netanyahu, to successfully outplay the Iranians in most
encounters, as proven by the recent Israeli attacks on Iranian military
bases in Syria. Moreover, it allowed Israel to develop close
relationships with Arab states that were previously aggressive towards
the Israeli cause, a thing that was deemed close to impossible a couple
of decades ago.
In
Europe, the US Trump Administration considers Russia, not the EU, as
the most important power, and developed a "cloaked", but nevertheless
close relationship with them.It is no secret, except it seems to the EU
Commission, that the US Trump Administration would like nothing better
than seeing the EU break apart.
The
EU has been engulfed in a state of political instability that seems to
have no end in sight. Cohesion between member states is at a historical
low, populists are gaining traction at a pace never seen before and a
constant state of fear and paranoia has characterized the European
population ever since the migration wave has hit the continent four
years ago.
At
present it seems that pragmatism and self-interest is what
characterizes Western Europe the most and a fracture has appeared
between the underprivileged East and the heavily industrialized West.
The recent emergence of the populist parties have made this very clear and now the European continent finds itself for the very first time with countries that have elected far-right or Eurosceptic political parties, as seen in the cases of Italy, Austria, Hungary, Italy, Romania and the Czech Republic. Realpolitik dictates that the ideology doesn’t matter anymore, but what happens when the two ideas are applied at the same time?

Realpolitik dictates that the ideology doesn’t matter anymore, but what happens when the two ideas are applied at the same time?
If
Britain does not come to its senses about Brexit and holds a second
referendum to stay in the EU, it is very well possible Britain could
become one of the poorest nations in Europe within a period of ten
years, specially if Scotland votes to become an independent nation and
joins the EU.
In
the Far East it is quite obvious that the US Trump Administration
considers China not only as the major power in the Region, but certainly
a long term dangerous rival.
Issues around technology transfer have been key during trade talks between the world's two largest economies in recent months.
"Every country now correctly recognizes that their prosperity, their wealth, their economic security, their military security is going to be linked to keeping a technological edge," says Stephen Olson, research fellow at global trade advisory body Hinrich Foundation.
But many also say their dispute goes well beyond trade - it represents a power-struggle between two very different world views.
Unfortunately, deal or no trade deal, that rivalry is only expected to broaden and become more difficult to resolve.
"We have entered into a new normal in which US-China geopolitical competition has intensified and become more explicit," says Michael Hirson, Asia director at consultancy firm Eurasia Group.
Realpolitik is now at play also between China and the US, at the highest level possible/
This isn’t the Cold War whatsoever, this is a completely different world. One based on economic factors, international political bullying and a shock factor never seen before.
Welcome to Earth, which side are you on?

EU - Saudi Relations: EP budget chair seeks clarity on Saudi lobbying and College of Europe - Nikolaj Nielsen
The EU-funded College of Europe must clarify its financial ties to
Saudi Arabia, the chair of a powerful European Parliament (EP) budgetary
committee has said.
The demand follows revelations last week by this website that the Saudis had paid the College of Europe to meet MEPs in a closed-door briefing at the EP as part of what the post-graduate institute describes as an "information or training exercise".
"This is clearly a type of action, which characterises a lobbyist organisation," said German centre-right MEP Ingeborg Graessle, who presides over the EP's budgetary control committee, in a letter sent on Wednesday (20 February) to College of Europe rector Jorg Monar and seen by EUobserver.
The Saudi-EP meeting on 19 February came less than a week after the EU parliament had passed a resolution condemning the abuse of human rights in Saudi Arabia.
It also followed recent moves by the European Union to put the Kingdom on a terror finance blacklist, as well as an arms embargo by Germany and several other EU states over the Saudi regime's murder of journalist Jamal Khashoggi last October.
"Bearing in mind that the College of Europe receives funds from the EU budget, we as the discharge authority of the EU, need to have a clear picture of your undertakings in order to safeguard the interests of EU taxpayers," Graessle said in her letter.

Saudi Arabia: Disappeared Saudi couple highlights crackdown on activists shows disrespect for human Rights of Saudi Government
The cases of Saudi stand-up comedian Fahad
al-Butairi and his wife, Loujain al-Hathloul, a women's right-to-drive
activist, who were arrested in 2018, has resurfaced following a Twitter
thread detailing their disappearance.
In a series of tweets, American writer and

Saudi couple who tried to challenge the kingdom's strict social rules.
The tweets about their disappearance went viral, spotlighting Saudi Arabia's crackdown on activists and the killing of journalist Jamal Khashoggi in the Saudi consulate in Istanbul in October last year.

Time Magazine Person of the year Award: : Khashoggi, murdered by Saudi Arabia and jailed journalists named Time's 'Person of the Year'
Time magazine on Tuesday named a group of journalists, including a
slain Saudi Arabian writer and a pair of Reuters journalists imprisoned
by Myanmar’s government, as its “Person of the Year,” in a cover story
headlined “The Guardians and the War on Truth.”
The honor went to a series of journalists including Reuters journalists Wa Lone, 32, and Kyaw Soe Oo, 28, who the government of Myanmar convicted on Sept. 3 under the colonial-era Official Secrets Act in a case seen as a test of democratic freedoms in Myanmar.
Also honored was Saudi journalist Jamal Khashoggi, a critic of Saudi Arabia’s de facto ruler Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman. Khashoggi was killed two months ago at the Saudi consulate in Istanbul when he went there to collect documents for his forthcoming marriage.
The 95-year-old magazine also honored Maria Ressa, the founder of the Philippine news site Rappler that has been a frequent critic of that nation’s President Rodrigo Duterte, and the staff of the Capital Gazette newspaper in Annapolis, Maryland, where a gunman shot and killed five people in June.
Time said it chose to honor journalism at time when the practice critical democracy is under threat both from governments and technological advances. Its annual distinction is intended to recognize the person, group, thing or idea that had the greatest influence on world events that year.

Saudi Arabia: Key Republicans say Saudi crown prince is guilty in Khashoggi murder following CIA Briefing - by Heather Timmons
Republican senators briefed by Central
Intelligence Agency director Gina Haspel about the death of journalist
Jamal Khashoggi Tuesday (Dec. 4) had an immediate reaction: Saudi crown
prince Mohammad bin Salman is guilty.
Lindsey
Graham, the South Carolina senator who has been a loyal supporter of
Donald Trump in recent months, told reporters on Capitol Hill there’s no
“smoking gun,” in the case, but a “smoking saw,”
a reference to the bone saw that the crown prince’s underlings
reportedly brought with them into the Istanbul embassy where Khashoggi
was killed on Oct. 2.
Bob Corker, the retiring Tennessee Republican, said a jury would find the crown prince guilty in minutes.
And Richard Shelby,
the Republican from Alabama, said “all evidence points to that all this
leads back to the crown prince.” Haspel briefed senators heading
committees related to national security; late last month she briefed
intelligence committees in the House and Senate about Khashoggi’s death.

USA: Trump becomes an accomplish in Khashoggi murder by saying "no new Saudi punishment for Khashoggi murder to guarantee weapons sales"
President Donald Trump said Tuesday the U.S. will not punish Saudi
Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman at this time nor cut arms sales to
Saudi Arabia for the killing of U.S.-based columnist Jamal Khashoggi.
Trump called the killing of Khashoggi inside the Saudi consulate in
Istanbul a "horrible crime" that the U.S. does not condone, but said
Saudi Arabia is a "great ally" and canceling billions in arms sales
would only benefit China and Russia, which would be glad to step in and
make the sales.
Trump's decision, announced in a statement released just before he left for the long Thanksgiving weekend in Florida, will disappoint and anger critics who have called for a much firmer rebuke to the kingdom and especially bin Salman.
Note EU-Digest: This is unacceptable by any human rights respecting Government, specially that of the United states. Shame on you Donald Trump.
