The Netherlands must ready itself for serious economic setbacks, king
Willem Alexander said on Tuesday afternoon, in his official speech to
mark the start of the parliamentary year.
The Dutch economy and government finances are healthy and financial
buffers have been built up over the past few years which we can now
benefit from, the king said. ‘Now we have to ready ourselves for the
consequences of a serious economic setback, which will impact the
economy and government finances in the long term,’ he said.
Much
depends on how long coronavirus keeps us in its grip, he said. ‘But the
recent figures and prognoses are unheard of in peace time,’ he said.
‘The economic setbacks facing our biggest European and global trading
partners are in many cases even greater. For an open country like the
Netherlands, with its focus on trade and exports, this is an extra
complication, especially in the wake of Brexit.’

The Netherlands: Anti-racism demos continue across the Netherlands, Eindhoven next up
Thousands of demonstrators took part in anti-racism rallies in the rain
in Utrecht, Nijmegen and Enschede on Friday and more gatherings are
planned for the next few days.
In Utrecht some 3,500 people assembled at the Jaarbeurs square near the main railway station, but officials used social media at around 7pm to urge people to stop coming because the space was too full.
In Nijmegen, demonstrators gathered in the Goffert park, where tape had been stretched out to show people where to stand at the proper distance from each other. Some 750 people had been expected to attend, but police photos put the number at around 1,000.
In Enschede, around 500 people took part in the demonstration on the Van Heekplein – the maximum agreed between organisers and the local authorities.
‘I was positively surprised at how many people took part,’ campaigner Mitchell Esajas told NPO radio. Esajas, who helped organise the earlier protests in Rotterdam and Amsterdam.

The Netherlands: Dutch foreign minister resigns after lying about Put0in meeting
Dutch foreign minister Halbe Zijlstra has resigned after admitting he
lied about being in Russian president Vladimir’s dacha in 2006 and
hearing Putin talk about his plans for a greater Russia.
Zijlstra had been under fire since admitting on Monday that he lied about overhearing Putin define ‘Greater Russia’ as ‘Russia, Belarus, Ukraine and the Baltic states,’ then adding that ‘Kazakhstan was nice to have’.
He had been due to debate the incident with MPs on Tuesday afternoon but resigned ahead of the scheduled debate.
In a short statement, Zijlstra said the lie was ‘by far the biggest mistake I have made in my political career’. ‘The Netherlands,’ he said, ‘deserves a foreign affairs minister who is above all reproach.’
Note EU-Digest: a courageous move by Halbe Zijlstra showing respect, as a politician, for Democratic values, in contrast to US President Donald Trump, who is able to lie on a daily basis and get away with it.

The Netherlands Trump Admirer and Muslim hater Geert Wilders tweets fake picture of political rival
Trump and Wilders:"we are the modern Biblical version of Samson" |
Some five weeks before key elections in The Netherlands, Wilders on Monday posted the fake picture of D66 leader Alexander Pechtold supposedly at a rally with Muslims holding up signs reading: "Islam will conquer Europe" and "Shariah for The Netherlands", referring to Islamic law.
Wilders' anti-Islam and anti-immigrant platform has helped propel his Freedom Party (PVV) to the top of the opinion polls in recent months in advance of the March 15 vote.
In his tweet, he accused Pechtold, who heads the pro-European, social-liberal D66 party of "demonstrating with Hamas terrorists".

The Netherland: 22 'pointless' US nuclear bombs at Dutch airbase - by Bruno Waterfield
A Dutch airbase houses 22 tactical nuclear bombs which belong to the United States NATO controlled arsenal as part of the old "Cold War" military arsenal described by the country's former Dutch Prime Minister Lubbers as "absolutely pointless".
The revelation and criticism from Lubbers could once again reignite the European nuclear issue as Dutch opposition politicians, on both the left and right, demand that the weapons are removed.
Note EU-Digest: lf nuclear war would break out in any area, be it in Russia, EU or the US, one can expect that there will be immediate retaliation by opposing forces to wipe out the others nuclear stockpiles, such as the one in the Netherlands. For the Netherlands this would certainly mean "Sayonara" to the world it is part of today.
